Renesas Electronics Corporation has announced a new addition to its RL78 microcontroller (MCU) Family, which is designed for power-sensitive applications. The new device, RL78/G24, offers the highest performance among all the devices in the RL78 family. It achieves this by incorporating a Flexible Application Accelerator (FAA) and a fast CPU capable of operating at a frequency of 48MHz.
The RL78/G24 MCU is equipped with enhanced peripheral functions, including analog and timer capabilities, making it well-suited for motor control, power supply control, and lighting control applications.
The FAA feature allows for efficient distribution of tasks such as inverter control, encryption, sensing, and arithmetic operations, independently of the CPU. This significantly boosts processing speed.
The RL78 Family of MCUs currently holds the largest share in the 16-bit MCU market. According to Toshihiko Seki, Vice President of MCU Device Solution Division at Renesas, the RL78/G24 offers a wide range of features and specifications, empowering customers to achieve high performance while minimizing costs.
Renesas has collaborated with ecosystem partners to enhance the development process and improve system performance.
For example, TESSERA TECHNOLOGY INC., an ecosystem partner, used the FAA capability of the RL78/G24 to divide communication processing and power control, resulting in shortened development time.
Additionally, Renesas has collaborated with MathWorks, a global strategic partner, to enable developers to use Model-Based Design. This allows for improved system performance and issue identification before implementing on the MCU. Mutual customers can utilize RL78 virtual models in Simulink to generate production-quality code, perform Processor-in-the-Loop testing, and maintain a digital thread.

The RL78/G24 offers a standby function to reduce power consumption. Customers can choose from two modes, HALT mode, which cuts power consumption by 60% compared to normal operation mode, and STOP mode, which reduces power consumption by 99% compared to HALT mode. These power-saving modes allow the device to use less power overall.
